AKRON SCHOLARSHIP PLAN FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

Welcome to this informational site on the Akron Scholarship Plan for the 21st Century, sponsored by Citizens to Keep Akron Strong.

We believe this is a critical time for our community. On Nov. 4, we have the opportunity to make higher education a reality for every qualified Akron high school graduate by voting yes on Issue 8. By seizing this opportunity, we can provide sustainable, long-term economic benefits to these graduates and our community. Akron, like all cities, needs a growing educated and skilled workforce to compete in today’s global marketplace.

Just what is Issue 8?

It is a ballot initiative to amend the city’s charter to establish the Akron Scholarship Plan. Funding for the plan will be generated by the long-term lease of Akron’s sanitary sewer system. Without any additional taxes, the Akron Scholarship Plan will pay tuition for Akron resident students to attend college, trade or technical schools after high school.

A growing number of American cities, such as Kalamazoo, Mich., and Pittsburgh, Pa., have adopted, or are considering, “Promise Scholarship” plans. By using public money, donations, or a combination of both, they are investing in the next generation as well as the future of their communities.

According to statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2006, the most recent available, earnings for year-round, full-time workers 25 years and over ranged widely:

  • Less Than High School — $30,146
  • High School Graduate — $38,837
  • Some College, No Degree — $45,232
  • Associate Degree — $47,401
  • Bachelor’s Degree — $67,766
  • Master’s Degree — $82,022
  • Doctorate — $115,377
  • Professional Degree — $130,377
